What Are Sports Injuries?

Sports injuries occur during exercise, running, or other athletic activities. Anyone can experience a sports injury, but they are most common in children and teenagers whose bodies are still developing. Some injuries occur suddenly from a single incident; others develop gradually over time from repetitive stress.

Diagnosing a Sports Injury

When you come in for a sports injury evaluation, Dr. Huang reviews your medical history and asks about the circumstances and symptoms of your injury. He then examines the affected area for redness, bruising, and swelling, tests range of motion, and identifies tender areas. Diagnostic imaging such as X-rays, a CT scan, or an MRI may be ordered to check for underlying problems, including fractures, dislocated joints, or tendinitis.

Sports Injury Treatment Options

Dr. Huang uses conservative, minimally invasive treatments as the first approach. He may recommend:

Immobilization with a cast, splint, or walking boot

Physical therapy and rehabilitation

Prescription anti-inflammatory medication

Injections to reduce pain and swelling

If these treatments do not provide lasting relief, Dr. Huang offers several types of minimally invasive surgery, including joint replacement, arthroplasty, and MAKOplasty®.

Reducing Your Risk of Sports Injuries

Proper warm-up and cool-down routines, appropriate equipment, and gradual increases in training intensity can significantly lower your risk of sports-related injury.
