What Is Arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses an arthroscope, a thin tube with a light and high-definition camera, to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal conditions. Dr. Huang uses arthroscopy to address problems affecting the:

Elbows

Feet and ankles

Hands and wrists

Hips

Knees

Shoulders, including frozen shoulder, rotator cuff tears, and shoulder impingement

Preparing for Arthroscopy

Dr. Huang completes a preoperative physical exam prior to your procedure. Let him know about any medications, supplements, or allergies you have, as some medications, such as blood thinners, may need to be paused beforehand. Fast for at least 12 hours before the procedure, drinking only water.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Arthroscopy is performed as an outpatient procedure, so no overnight hospital stay is required. Dr. Huang administers general anesthesia, then makes several small incisions near the treatment site. The arthroscope provides a real-time video feed on a monitor in the operating room, which Dr. Huang uses to examine the joint and identify damage to tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. Repairs are made through the same small incisions using specialized instruments.
